Which van for which trip?

If you only have two minutes, read this.

4 trips couples and families actually book, and the Offgrid Campers WA camper we'd hand you for each. Based on a decade of driving these routes ourselves.

  • FOR · COUPLES

Two of you, sealed-road south-west or south-coast loop

The fixed bed on the Voyager wins this trip. No rooftop tent to wrestle in 90 km/h coastal wind, no daily setup. If budget matters more than the bigger bed, the Abi runs the same trip at $140.

Pick: Voyager, or Abi on a budget

  • FOR · FAMILY OF 4

Two adults + two kids, south-west loop, 10–14 days

Niesie's the family pick: lithium power, 110L fridge for a week of cold meat, queen bed below + rooftop queen above. Vicky is the newest van in the fleet, same off-grid setup, premium Hiace GL fit-out. Abi is the budget alternative if second-bed flexibility works for your kids' ages.

Pick: Niesie · Vicky · Abi

  • FOR · THE NEWEST DRIVE

Four travellers who want a near-new van

Vicky is the newest in the fleet, a 2021 Hiace GL, smooth diesel auto, premium 150mm mattress, full lithium, 3000W gas-free build. The nicest vehicle here for long sealed touring with four.

    Pick: Vicky

  • YOU PROBABLY WANT A 4WD CAMPER

Heading to Karijini or any gravel-access national park

The four 2WD vans here aren't rated for gravel beyond a short, well-graded park access. Stix is the exception, the gas-free Hiace 4WD in this range handles the Coral Bay-to-Karijini turn, the Stirling Range access and the Cape Range gravel stretches. For twin rooftop tents or a family of four on those routes, see the full 4WD line-up.

Pick: Stix · or see all 4WD campers

FAQ

The six questions Dorian gets most weeks.

The 6 questions Offgrid Campers WA gets asked most about campervan hire in Perth. Anything else, ring him on 0422 428 584 or skim the full FAQ.

Q.01

Do I need a 4WD to drive Perth → Margaret River?

No. The south-west loop (Perth → Margaret River → Albany) is sealed end to end and any of our campervans handles it without issue. A 4WD only earns its keep on gravel access into national parks like Karijini, and we don't run those routes in the 2WD fleet.

Q.02

How long can I stay off-grid without recharging?

Most rigs ship with a 300Ah lithium house battery, a 200W fixed solar panel, and a fridge-freezer that pulls about 2–3kWh per day. In typical use, fridge running, lights, USB charging, one induction meal a day, you've got 3 to 4 days off-grid before the battery's flat with no sun. In WA sun the panel tops you up daily; combine that with an hour or two of driving and you're effectively never running out. Heavy induction cooking shortens that; fridge-only camping stretches it past a week.

Q.03

Is bedding included?

Pillows, blankets and quilts live in every camper. A made-up linen pack (fitted sheet, top sheet, pillowcases, towels) is an optional $45 add-on per hire if you'd rather skip the laundry on day one.

Q.04

Does the Niesie, Vicky or Abi really sleep four adults?

Yes, but read the bed configuration on each vehicle page before you book. Niesie has a queen below plus an electric queen rooftop tent. Vicky sleeps four inside with an optional hire swag for an extra sleeper. Abi sleeps four with a queen below and the double swag. Voyager is couples only, single fixed bed, no second sleeping space.

Q.05

How does the booking actually work?

Every camper on this page is listed on Camplify, the Book button opens the live availability for that exact vehicle. You pay through Camplify (insurance and the 200km/day allowance are bundled into the daily rate). Dorian does the in-person handover at Cloverdale next to Perth Airport for the Voyager, and at Gosnells for the Niesie, Abi, Vicky and Stix. Pickup and return Perth only, no one-ways.

Q.06

What does 'WA Parks Pass included' mean?

Every camper is registered with a current annual WA National Parks Pass. You don't pay park entry fees anywhere across the state, Cape Le Grand, Karijini, Cape Range, Kalbarri, the Stirlings, Walpole. It's already on the vehicle.

  • Heading further than sealed roads?

The 4WDs (Wanderer, Wanderer 2.0, Bakkie, Bakkie 2.0 and Stix) run the same kitchen and battery setup with gravel-rated tyres and rooftop tents. Made for the South West loops, the south-coast beaches and the Coral Coast as far as the Karijini.

  • Three loops, fuel to fuel.

South-west wineries and karri forest. South-coast cliffs and Lucky Bay sand. Coral Coast snorkelling by request. Each guide is written from the seat of the van.

  • No rental desk. One owner.

Dorian configured the Voyager, the two Wanderer 4WDs and the Bakkies himself. He answers the phone. He hands you the keys. Twelve percent of last summer's bookings were people coming back.
